Drawn to the so-called “clichéd” representations of Mediterranean landscapes, Hélène Bellenger presents a series of images that both pay homage to the famous seascapes of Gustave Le Gray and embody a discourse on the fragility of these coastal ecosystems. For this project, she conducted photographic documentation of the Mediterranean coastline using the Polaroid technique. She approached this landscape documentation in a methodical manner, creating an inventory of the most threatened coastal areas of the Mediterranean.

From these images, she created a kind of “photographic herbarium,” producing photographic fragments of the Mediterranean by using Polaroid gelatin lifts. This process was inspired by 19th-century seaweed herbariums she admired at the Marseilles Institute of Oceanology (M.I.O.). This artistic approach deliberately alters the postcard-like aesthetic typical of Mediterranean coastlines, thus highlighting the degradation and vulnerability of these coastal landscapes.

Attirée par les représentations dites « clichés » des paysages méditerranéens, Hélène Bellenger présente une série d’images qui rendent à la fois hommage aux célèbres marines de Gustave Le Gray et incarnent un discours sur la fragilité de ces écosystèmes côtiers. Pour ce projet, elle a réalisé une documentation photographique du bord de mer méditerranéen en utilisant la technique du Polaroid. Elle a mené cette documentation de paysages côtiers de manière protocolaire, une sorte d’inventaire des espaces méditerranéens les plus menacés.

À partir de ces images, elle a créé une sorte d’« herbier photographique » en réalisant des fragments photographiques de la Méditerranée au moyen de décollements de gélatine Polaroid, inspirée des herbiers d’algues du 19e siècle qu’elle a pu admirer au sein de l’Institut Méditerranéen d’Océanologie (le M.I.O.). Cette approche plasticienne altère ainsi délibérément l’esthétique des images « cartes postales » typiques du bord de mer méditerranéen, soulignant la détérioration et la vulnérabilité de ces paysages côtiers.
